I am the Tournament Director that Lab is referring to.
I will happily explain why MANY players LIKE and REQUEST the "no byes" tournaments that I host and have ALWAYS hosted.
It is important to understand (if you are not a pinochle player) that unlike cribbage or euchre or many other card games, Pinochle is a LONG game. I only host "real" pinochle, that is to say, traditional, regular, normal, standard, etc... Some TD's choose to host "variation" games, where the rules are changed to fit someones "fancy". (...that is an entirely different discussion, as Lab will attest to.)
At any rate, REAL pinochle takes (on the average) 45-60 minutes to play 1 game. Some are quicker, some are longer, but that is a reasonable estimate. Typically, in a tourney, you can expect at least one of the games to last over an hour.
Players don't want "byes" because then they have to WAIT. Would YOU want to wait for ME to play for 45-90 minutes before you even got to sit and LOOK at a card? Most do NOT want to. And if you allow a 17th player to check in and play, you have created FIFTEEN BYES while 2 players are playing! 15 people are waiting, potentially up to 2 hours for 2 players to finish!
They can amuse themselves while they wait, yes, BUT... they cannot play a ladder game... it is a violation of the rules to do so, unless you withdraw from the tourney.
This is NOT a new concept... I have ALWAYS hosted my tournaments this way, and almost ALL the players know this.
Now there ARE some other circumstances to consider... for example... if I am running a tourney and it is time to begin, I ALWAYS start on time...ty Turambar65!! If we have 15 players, YES... I will delay if I know of a 16th that wants to play. That's REASONABLE! But let's say there are 12 players checked in. The first 8 play and the other 4 get dropped. Sorry!
HOWEVER!!... I will HAPPILY and INSTANTLY create another tourney for the 4 players if they WANT me to. This, of course does not address the situation where 1 or 2 get dropped, but I try to keep as many players as possible happy. I'd rather have 16 happy and 2 sad than 2 happy and 16 sitting and waiting and MAD! I'm NOT trying to keep people from playing pinochle... that's what BYES do!
And why should the person who registered at the LAST POSSIBLE MINUTE be given the same treatment as the person who signed up 3 days ago? Sorry... not in my tourneys. It CLEARLY says in ALL of my rules "NO BYES! Register early and check in on time." (to avoid being dropped) The person who registered 3 days ago and PLANNED their evening will get to play. The person who signed up at the last minute MAY get to play. But I am not going to make everyone else suffer through (potentially) HOURS of waiting while the last minuter gets to play... and Murphy's Law dictates here... inevitably, everyone waits except the person that created the byes.
By the way, as far as I know, I am the only TD who chooses to host tourneys with "no byes". We have other TDs who let everyone play NO MATTER WHAT. It's WONDERFUL!! We can please ALL the players with a CHOICE for them to make! No one is FORCING anyone to play in ANY of the tourneys! They get to CHOOSE which ones and which rules they like or dislike.
Imagine that?!! Apparently we are NOT in Communist Russia in the 1970's!! We are in the land of the FREE TO CHOOSE WHICH PINOCHLE WE WANT TO PLAY!! YEEE HAAAWW!!!!
Lastly, I want to address the implication that I am diabolical enough to manipulate this situation to effect the ladder rank. How ridiculous!! Yes, the possibility exists for some idiot to waste their time trying this. However... I am ABOVE such implications. I don't lie, cheat or steal. The 100's of players I HAVE MET IN PERSON and the 1000's I have met online will tell you the same. I feel sorry for the dumb SOB who would go to THAT much trouble to try and get a few rungs on an imaginary ladder... just play the damn game... that's why we're all here.
In closing, if I have not yet made it clear to you, feel free to contact me at Nettles_390@yahoo.com. Or use the Yahoo Messanger.
THAT, as PH says, is the REST of the story... and alot of players are CHEERING for "no byes"!
Take Care,
Play Hard & Fair
